November: our last month as EVS at Infopeka

     

         The first week end of november, we went with Camille another French EVS from Krško, in Budapest. We were happy to discover another capital, and going out from Maribor. Budapest is a really beautiful city, with a lot of things to do, see and visit. In fact, we went up to see the castle and the amazing city's point of view from there. Then we visited the synagogue, the basilica, the inside market, ruins bars, and we ate a lot :) . It was a good week end.

         After that, we came back at work, to organize 2 last projects. The 3rd of december, at Infopeka, there will be an EVS evening, we will watch a film from an ex EVS in Cerkno, then we are in charge to organize the evening. So we would like to discuss about our own experiences in Slovenia and present pictures.

For our last  project not as EVS but as curator, we plan to organize in december one art evening. With Jade we want to make a project in wild spaces in Maribor, like abandoned houses, places, etc, where we are not used to expose art. After to walk through Maribor looking for those kind of places, we found an exploitable space. It's the stair tower which is at the level of the main bridge that connects ŠTUK to Pohorje. This place which is already tagged and offers a beautiful point of view on the Drava, is an interesting place to exhibit pictures with point of view of landscapes and city, as well. So, the idea is to offer a point of view seen from another point of view :). The project consists to exhibit one French EVS who took pictures from Slovenia. Here it will be about Prekmurje region.

"My land that doesn't exist" point of view from Art History

       Nous avons voulu créer un concept, d'un voyage culturel et artistique. Savoir ce qui est vrai du faux, est-ce que ce qui est présenté peut faire partie de la vérité ou non, est-ce que l'on a affaire à des images d'archives représentant un vrai périple ou bien est-ce juste une idée, un concept qui apparait en une exposition culturelle, telle qu'un docu-fiction? Montrer comment un étranger tente de rentrer et de s'approprier une nouvelle terre, de nouvelles coutumes et faire partie petit à petit du groupe.

Cette exposition amène le spectateur à se questionner sur la notion de voyage et d'exotisme via tous les rites et coutumes du pays "d'accueil". Tel est le sujet de l’exposition « My land that doesn’t exist ».

Cette idée d’exposition, est en fait en lien avec les expositions ethnographiques que l’on a pu voir tout au long de l’histoire de l’art, rapportant les mœurs, les coutumes et le fonctionnement de la vie d’une population donnée.

Ici, on a voulu rajouter un apport contemporain via des photos et vidéos travaillées techniquement et esthétiquement car les expositions ethnographiques sont présentent pour apporter un contenu en lien avec la population : rapporter des objets du pays ou de la communauté, montrer les rites, mais ici sous un angle esthétique contemporain, ne pas simplement montrer pour montrer, comme des phénomènes de foires ou des choses étranges, mais apporter un concept plus fort et plus artistique. 

Cependant, l’exposition a voulu rejouer cette idée de terrain, qu’ont en commun les expositions ethnographique où l’on part dans des pays pour rapporter des objets, des idées, des vécus, que l’on présentera alors au musée et à la population occidentale. Ici le but était de jouer sur cette idée de l’appropriation de la terre, montrer le minimum au public tout en lui faisant comprendre que les artistes sont bien allés dans cette terre inconnue pour en ramener une plante, une pierre et des preuves photographique et vidéographiques de manière à intégrer la population, par des rites, des coutumes. Mais, le but a aussi été de jouer avec le faux et le vrai. Sommes-nous face à un simulacre ou sommes-nous dans l’entière vérité ? Face à cette question, le visiteur se devait de créer sa propre opinion. 

Cette idée de réel et d’irréel est très présente dans l’art et notamment la photographie. En effet, ce médium qui a été inventé et utilisé au début du XIXème siècle, a été en 1^er lieu un moyen d’enregistrer le réel. Mais petit à petit grâce à une technique particulière, une mise en scène, la photo apporte un flou et peut facilement transfigurer le réel. La photo peut alors devenir simulacre du réel, c’est-à-dire que l’on peut fabriquer et truquer le réel et ainsi faire croire à la vérité. C’est ainsi que l’exposition a souhaité d’une certaine manière traitée de ce sujet. 

“My land that doesn’t exist”, est-elle le reflet d’un voyage initiatique réalisé par des artistes à la rencontre d’une population et de ses coutumes, ou bien est-ce un simulacre ? 

Voilà, une des questions principales de cette exposition...

We wanted to create a concept of a cultural and artistic trip. We wanted to know what is true or false, if the presented material can be part of the truth or not? Are we dealing with archival footage representing a real trip or is it just an idea, a concept which appears in a cultural exhibition such as a docufiction? It shows how a foreigner tries to enter and integrate themselves to a new land, new customs and step by step become part of the group. This exhibition evokes within the spectator thoughts of wonder about the notion of travel and exotic via all rites and customs of the hosting country. That is the main subject of the exhibition.

The exhibition is actually a reference to ethnographic exhibitions, which have been popular throughout the History of Art, bringing back habits, customs and the life of a certain population.

Here however we wanted to add a contemporary medium, such as photography and video, because ethnographic exhibitions are presented to provide content in relation to the population: they report objects from a certain country or community, show the rites but with a contemporary aesthetic perspective. They’re not represented as fair phenomena or objects of curiosity, but have a stronger and artistic concept.

However, we wanted to replay the idea of going to a foreign country and bringing back objects, ideas and experience, which would later build up to an ethnographic exhibition. Our goal was to integrate ourselves with the population. Once we’ve achieved that, we could show and present all these objects and ideas at the museum and to the occidental population. ”My land that doesn’t exist” aims to play on this idea of integration, to show to the public that the artists have really been to this unknown land. They brought back a plant, a stone and photographic and videographic evidence, which were the medium of integration through rites and customs. Furthermore, the aim was to play with the false and the truth. Are we in front of a simulacrum or are we seeing the whole truth? While wondering, the visitor should be able to create his own opinion.

This idea of real and surreal is very present in art and particularly in the photography. In fact, this media, which was invented and used from the beginning of the 19^th century, was firstly used as a way to record the reality. But little by little, thanks to particular techniques and direction, the photography becomes blurry and can easily transform this reality. Therefore, the photography can become a simulacrum of the reality, which means that we can transform it and still pretend to show the truth.

Is "My land that doesn't exist" the reflection of an initiation trip performed by artists, who wanted to meet a population and their customs, or is it just a simulacrum? 

This is one of the main questions of this exhibition…

Octobre:

Le mois d'une seconde exposition à la galerie K18. En effet, à la fin du mois de Septembre, INFOPEKA nous ont dit "la galerie est libre pour 2 semaines, donc vous pouvez réaliser quelque chose." Mais nous avions qu'une semaine pour créer un événement. Nous avions décidées d'organiser une seconde exposition. L'idée était déjà dans nos tête, ou plutôt celle de Jade. Nous avons donc décidé de travailler autour du voyage et tenter de recréer une exposition de type ethnographique ou un docufiction. Montrer comment un étranger tente de rentrer et de s'approprier une nouvelle terre, de nouvelles coutumes et faire partie petit à petit d'un groupe, d'une communauté.

Cette exposition amène le spectateur a se questionner sur le notion de voyage et d'exotisme via tous les rites et coutumes du pays "d'accueil".

Nous avons donc créer notre propre terre, en rapportant des objets de la nature et photographiant le voyageur tentant d'intégrer la communauté du pays via des rites. Avec des documents d'archives, des objets qui empiètent sur l'espace, des photos et des vidéos invitant le public à un voyage immobile. De plus, il y a un questionnement sur le faux du vrai, le réel de l'irréel, est-ce que ce voyage a été réalisé ou est-ce une idée, un concept?

Au fil du temps, en voulant créer cette terre, peut être que nous nous sommes rendues compte que ce n'était qu'en fin de compte, notre nouveau pays d'accueil: La Slovénie. Depuis, plus de 6 mois, nous sommes là à essayer de nous accoutumer aux normes du pays, d'en apprendre les coutumes, etc.

Cela à été intéressant d'organiser cette exposition, car nous avons pu réellement travailler sur la scénographie, comment mettre en place les oeuvres, créer directement des oeuvres sur le mur, etc. Comment remplir l'espace de la galerie?

Bien que l'exposition soit correcte, la réalisation en seulement une semaine, n'a pas permis d'apporter tout les éléments nécessaires a une exposition complète, c'est pourquoi je souhaiterais renouveler l'expérience en France, et pourquoi pas l'améliorer.

Ensuite, du 3 au 5 Octobre, nous avons participé bénévolement au festival de stop motion animation STOPTRIK organisé par deux anciens EVS polonais. Notre tâche était d'être présent en tant que comité des votes. Nous avons du créer les bulletins de votes, être présent à toutes les séances et distribuer les bulletins au public (ceci était cool car nous avions pu visionner tous les films de la sélection, c'était très intéressant). Ce fut un festival intense en terme de compétition car les films étaient  tous très bon, de plus chaque soir il y avait des concerts, djs, donc nous y participions aussi pour être de la partie :)

Nous sommes dans la deuxième semaine d'octobre, mais j'ai l'impression que nous avons déjà fait beaucoup de projets en ce début du mois :)

Exhibition "My land that doesn't exist"

October:

The month of a second exhibition in the gallery K18. In fact, at the end of September, INFOPEKA told us that the gallery will be free for 2 weeks, so we can do something there. But we had only one week to create an event. We had decided to organize another exhibition. The idea was already in our minds, or rather that one of Jade. So, we decided to work about the traveling and attempt to recreate an ethnographic exhibition or a docu-fiction. To show how a foreigner try to enter and integrate themselves in a new land, news customs and be part of the group or the community. This exhibition brings the spectator wonder themselves about the notion of travel and exotic via all rites and customs of the hosting country.

So, we created  our own land, to bringing back objects from nature and by photographing the traveler trying to integrate the community. With archives documents, objects who take all the space, photos and videos we invite the public to an immobile trip. Furthemore, there is a question on the false and the truth, the surreal to the real, does this trip has been carried out or is it just and idea, a concept? Over time, in trying to create this earth, perhaps we realized that it was after all, our new hosting country: Slovenia. Since, more than 6 months, we are here to try to accustom us to the standars of the country, to learn the customs, etc.

That was interesting to organize this exhibition, because we could work on the scenography, how to set up works, create directly works on the wall, etc. How to fill the space of the gallery? Although the exhibition is correct, the realization in just one week did not bring about the necessary elements has a complete exhibition, that's why I wish to repeat the experience in France, and why not improve it.

Then, from the 3st and the 5st of October, we have volunteered at STOPTRIK festival (stop motion animation festival) organized by 2 ex Polish EVS. Our task was to be present to the voting comitee. We should create the voting cards, be present to all the screenings and give voting cards to the audience (it was cool because we could watch all the films selectionned, it was very interesting). Then the last day, we should count votes to know who was the winner of the competition. We are in the third week of October, but I have the impression that we have already done a lot of projects.

STOPTRIK festival

Begining of september or Week end de Piruleta at Brežice

La rentrée en Slovénie, c'est sport ! En fait après s'être baladé un peu partout en SLO, on reprend doucement nos habitudes à Maribor avec Clémentine. Mais dès le premier week-end de septembre, marqué d'une pierre blanche, le weekend de Piruleta des filles de Brežice. Et oui ! La rentrée c'est aussi repartir visiter les autres EVS durant le weekend. Marie et Ana, viennent de France et d'Espagne et font leur EVS à Brežice, dans le sud de la Slovénie, à 2h30 de Maribor en train.

Arrivées vendredi soir, nous avons eu le temps de nous présenter : d'où nous venons ? Où nous faisons notre EVS ? et dans quel domaine. Ces petites questions sont devenues habituelles pour nous. Un vendredi soir passé à discuter autour de quelques plats espagnols qui mettaient déjà l'eau à bouche avant le samedi soir. Attablés autour d'une table, une 15 ène d'EVS se découvrent et s'échangent bons plans, expériences et facebook ! Certains nouveaux visages nous sont présentés.

Samedi, chacun à son rythme, la journée commence. Tout le monde s'affère en cuisine, les recettes sont échangées, sur fond de Fado, musique colombienne, rap US... Mais c'est pour mieux encouragé les troupes EVS qui préparent le diner. Au menu :
- Piperade, accompagnement gastronomique d'origine basque à base de poivrons, tomates et piments.
- Aïoli, qui est une sauce faîte d'ail et d'huile d'olive, servi avec des champignons.
- Tortilla, une omelette de pomme de terre avec des oignons.
- Crêpes bretonne.
- Sangria, la boisson espagnole par excellence.
- Salmorejo, preparation à base de mie de pain, huile d'olive, tomate et ail.

Le soir un orchestre slovène est venu jouer spécialement pour l'évènement. On reconnaissait des musiques espagnoles et françaises reprises au son des cuivres. Dans une ambiance de ferias on a commencé à danser devant les yeux des slovènes ébaïs, accoudés au bar. Finalement c'est dans une joie partagée qu'on s'est essayé à la traditionelle danse chorégraphiée par Marie le paquito. La performance orchestrale du groupe Trobsi Loče était de grande qualité. 

Nous avons passé la nuit à côté du MC Brežice, dans l'hostel rénové. Nous avons partagé tous nos repas dans la cuisine de l'hostel. Comme toujours les évènements EVS sont une réussites parce que le groupe est hétéroclytes et chacun y trouve son compte. Que ce soit dans la musique, dans la discussion, on commence à se connaître de mieux en mieux et à se soutenir.

    We were in Brežice for 3 days on the begining of september. We were there for the «Weekend de Piruleta» an event organized by two evs girls from France and Spain (Marie Laborde and Ana Beltran Porcar). During this weekend we were invited to cook specialities from spain and france (Piperade, aïoli, tortilla, crêpes, sangria, salmorejo).
On saturday evening a band from slovenia came to play some known songs from these two countries.
We were in the MC of Brežice and we could sleep at the hostel. Everything was included for 1 euro per night. We shared breakfasts, lunch, diner, with all the evs.
The first night we took time to present ourselves to others and to discover in which part of Slovenia we come from.

holidays month & EVS training

      The month of holidays: August, friends and my familly came in slovenia to visit me, it was the good occasion to travel around Slovenia.

It was nice to show my environment since 6 month at all my family: how I live, where I work, my friends, my favorite place to hang out, etc.

All this person brought me this envy to continue more my projects in Slovenia and everywhere.

The last week in August with Jade we went in Dobrna for our Mid-term training with the others volunteers. 

I can say that at the beginning I was not so ready to go there, because i had bad memories about the last training, After one month in holidays without coming at infopeka, i wanted to come back there and start new projects.

But ok, I can say that I liked this training. It was in a good environment with new EVS and the workshops were more interesting for my questions. In fact, it was about the future, after EVS , how to "use" our Evs in our life. All the week was more free than last training, we had more free time to discuss with the others volunteers and talk about our own projects and maybe do something together. It was also a new opportunity to meet new people and make a new network.

How was July?

       Le mois de Juillet a été le mois de notre exposition. Lors du vernissage nous avons réuni une quarantaine de personnes et lors du mois environ vingt personnes sont venus découvrir les artistes présentés à la galerie K18. Ce fut intéressant d'être présent pour les visiteurs car nous pouvions facilement leur apporter des informations car nous étions les organisateurs de cette exposition. Les gens paraissaient satisfaits de ce qui était présentés.

Pour ma part, j'ai passé tout un weekend dans la nature slovène à Gorni Grad pour un festival ou plutôt un Non- Festival traduit en Slovène: Ne-Festival. Ce fut un agréable weekend, car ça m'a permis de visiter un autre coin de Slovénie, de rencontrer d'autres personnes. A propos du théâtre et des ateliers, nous étions divisés en plusieurs ateliers pour travailler en petit groupe. L'atelier dans lequel j'étais, était  davantage sur la psychologie, la recherche de soi et de ses traumas. Je n'ai pas l'habitude de me questionner sur moi même,  chercher en profondeur, donc ça été un peu étrange mais en fait je m'y suis faite, et comme nous étions dans une très belle atmosphère, je ne me suis pas trop posée de question et j'ai réalisé les ateliers. Ce fut un riche weekend, et après ça deux de mes très bonnes amies sont arrivées de France à Ljubljana lundi matin pour une semaine. C'était parfait nous avons pu visiter la capitale et Maribor et ses alentours, j'étais vraiment contente de les voir ici en Slovénie.

Nous avons chacune d'entre nous reçu soit nos amies ou notre famille en ce mois de Juillet. Il a été bon de passer de tels moments et de pouvoir revoir au bout de 5 mois des personnes sur qui on compte vraiment et qui nous ont donné pleins de bonheurs en étant là. On a été ravi de pouvoir leur faire découvrir le pays dans lequel on vit et on profite de chacun de nos moments.

Going to the castle

         July was the month of our exhibition. During the opening, about 40 people came and during all the month about 20 people came to discover the artists presented in K18. It was interesting to be present for the visitors because we could bring informations because we were the organizers of this exhibition. People seemed satisfied to look all the works.

Otherwise, I spent all one week end in the Slovenian nature in Gorni Grad for a festival or rather a Non-festival translate in Slovene: Ne-festival. It was a festival around theater, but on the theater of the oppressed, for those who don't know, look this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatre_of_the_Oppressed

It was a pleasant weekend, because it allowed to me to visit another part of Slovenia and to meet new people. About theater and workshops, we were in several groups in difference workshops. Which one where I was, was more about psychology, the research of itself and his traumas. I'm not used to question myself and search in depth, so it was a bit weird but actually I did it and i was ok, also because we were in a good atmosphere. It was a full weekend, and then two of my friends came from France in Ljubljana for one week. it was perfect, we could visit the capital and Maribor, i was really happy to see them in Slovenia. We have each of us hosted either our friends or our family in July. It was good to spend such moments and be able to see again after 5 months, people on whom we really matter and give us full of happiness. It was a pleasure to make discover them the country where we live.

JUIN JUIN JUIN JUIN

     Si je devais résumer mon mois de Juin en Slovénie je commencerais par la fin : le 30/06, jour du vernissage de notre exposition. Cette date représente l'acheminement d'un projet collectif entre Clémentine et moi. Ainsi que le milieu de notre EVS à Maribor. Déjà 5 mois qu'on est arrivé et le temps file toujours.

C'est donc ce 30 Juin qu'a lieu l'ouverture en présence de Clémentine, Ana Beltran Porcar, (l'une des artistes présente ce jour là), et de Sara Zickar (dont on avait parlé précédemment). A ma grande surprise nous n'avons pas eu de rush ni de contre-temps, après un léger détour à Brežiče le Jeudi 26 Juin, pour aller chercher les travaux d'Ana (c'est à dire deux grandes peintures encadrées) nous avons pu profiter de la ville ainsi que de la performance de notre jeune artiste avec le musicien slovène Marco. Marco est le batteur du groupe Elvis Jackson originaire de Maribor.

Nous connaissions le travail d'Ana d'après photos, ou d'après vidéos, mais nous ne l'avions encore jamais vu performer en Live. J'ai été très impressionnée de voir l'énergie qu'elle accumule sur scène ainsi que sa détermination à créer et à partager son énergie. C'était important pour nous de la voir dans son élément et de la soutenir dans ses actions. Ana suit avec son pinceau, le martellement de la baguette de Marco au rythme des chansons les plus populaires du groupe. La peinture fait office de prolongement du son émis par le batteur. C'est un duo qui n'existait pas auparavant qui prend forme sur scène face au public. Pourtant l'artiste me parait toujours seul sur son champ de bataille, à vrai dire même si la forme d'un duo, d'un collectif existe, l'artiste garde toute son essence individuelle et ce jour là, Ana a démontré qu'elle faisait corps avec la peinture.

Derrière l'exposition Foreign Bodies nous avons souhaité avoir différents points de vue sur le corps vu par l'artiste. A la manière de jeux, ou de manière plus académique, en utilisant différent support technique, vidéos, illustrations... Il n'y a pas une bonne et seule manière de montrer le corps. Ce corps qui pour moi est notre premier repère.

Au même moment avait lieu le festival Lent à Maribor, un évènement phare de l'année durant 2 semaines. Ce festival célèbre le folklore, la culture et la musique. Des scènes apparaissent un peu partout dans la ville et pas seulement sur la Drava. Il y a aussi Art Kamp qui s'installe au coeur du parc principal de Maribor de 16h à 20h. L'endroit est propice aux enfants et des stands sont montés proposant différentes activités afin de découvrir les nombreuses organisations de Maribor. Dans un cadre 1OO% naturel une scène plus grande apparaît au milieu des rares stands de nourriture. Je précise que la partie culinaire se passe sur le Lent. Là, fleurissent une 20ène de tentes abritant les cuisiniers de Maribor, venus se vendre tous les soirs pendant 2 semaines.
Le contraste entre Art Kamp et les bords de la Drava sur le Lent, est flagrant. D'un côté on se retrouve à batifoler dans l'herbe folle au milieu d'enfants calmes et concentrés sur leur collage-peinture, et de l'autre cette société de consommation qui pousse toujours les gens à reprendre une part de pizza pour 1euro où la musique prend place dans une cacophonie qui parfois ne va pas toujours avec le repas.
Au milieu de ces deux atmosphères que tout semble opposer, la ville de Maribor qui est réveillée par quelques scènes musicales, et des performances de street theatre qui naissent au grès des balades. Les cours intérieures se laissent découvrir et nous entraînent dans des lieux méconnus de Maribor, parfois au son de percussion ou de Dj set improvisé. En résumé nous avons eu l'occasion de partager beaucoup de bons moments dans une foule hétéroclite, venue pour faire la fête et cherchant la surprise.

    If i had to resume the month of June i would start by the end. The 30^th of June exactly happened the opening of our exhibition FOREIGN BODIES. This date represents also the end of a collectif project between Clémentine and I. And as the same time it is also the middle of our EVS in Maribor. We just arrived 5 months before. Time is running out !

This 30^th June was the opening, Clémentine Clénet, Ana Beltran Porcar, (one of the artist of the exhibition) and Sara Zickar (which one we already talk about) was there. I was suprise because we were ready, we didn't have any times of rush or stress time. We had to make a detour to pick up the art work of Ana in Brežiče. That means bring back to Maribor two big pieces of painting with frames. This short detour has permited us to visit the town but we especially went to see Ana performed. On the 26^th June she had a representation with Marco, a famous musician of Elvis Jackson's band. We already knew Ana's work by photos or videos but we never seen it before performed in live. I was really impressed by her energy and her motivation to create something from nothing. I mean that she started to create from the play of Marco. She transcribed the music in painting. It was important for us to see her in her element and to support her actions. Ana follows with her brush the pounding of the baton of Marco. Painting is like an extension of the sound emitted by the drummer. This duo didn't exist before and it takes shape on stage in front of the audience. To tell the truth even if we had in front of us a duet or a collective action, for me the artist is always alone, she has all her individual essence and that day Ana demonstrated that her body make part of her paint.

Behind the Foreign Bodies exhibition we wanted to have different points of view on the body seen by several artists. Manner of games, or more like an academic way, using different technical support, videos, illustrations... there is not a good and an only way to showing body. This body wich is for me our first mark.

At the same time was the Lent Festival in Maribor. It's an important event of the year and it's during 2 weeks. This festival celebrates folklore, culture and music. Scenes appear throughout the city and not only on the Drava river. At the same time Art Kamp settled in the heart of the main Park of Maribor frome 4pm to 8pm. The place is fantastic for children a lot of activities for free are present and it's also a good time to discover stands from several organizations of Maribor wich are present. It's in this 100% natural setting that a larger stage appears in the middle of the rare food stalls.. I should mention that the culinary part happens on the Lent. Around 20 tents sheltering cooks from Maribor. The cookers came to sell their services every night for 2 weeks.

The contrast between Art Kamp and the edges of the Drava river on the Lent, is obvious. On the one hand, we find ourselves to frolic in the wild grass in the middle of children calm and concentrated on their collage-painting, and on the other this consumer society that always pushes people to regain a slice of pizza for 1 euro where music takes place in a cacophony which sometimes goes wrong with the meal.

In the middle of these two atmospheres that everything seems to be opposite, the city of Maribor who is awakened by some music scenes, and street theatre performances which born with the sandstone of the walks. Courtyards let us discover and lead us into unknown places of Maribor, sometimes to the sound of percussion or Dj set improvised. In summary we had the opportunity to share many good moments in a motley crowd, who came to partying and seeking surprise.
